Cycle Speedway is a fairly specialist sport developed in the late 40’s. Its origins originating from motorised speedway with the main difference being the use of pushbikes rather than motorcycles. It is similar in many ways. The bikes are custom built machines with no breaks, gears or suspension. Just a frame, a set of wheels, handlebars, a seat and a drive train.
The Bikes:
The bikes are custom built machines with no breaks, gears or suspension. Just a frame, a set of wheels, handlebars, a seat and a drive train. These can be purchased from a handful of specialist manufacturers for around £200 new, or picked up for a lot less second hand. Cycles can even be converted from old frames by removing and brake or gear mountings.
The Races:
Races take place over 4 laps of a specially built ‘shale’ surfaced oval circuit from a standing start. These usually take less than a minute to complete with around 18 races per match, although riders often only participate in around 5 of these. Contact during races is permitted and often necessary, but injuries are quite uncommon.
It is both a team and individual sport, with different events taking place throughout the racing season. Clubs are spread over the length and breadth of Britain with each participating in a local league and various other competitions throughout the year.
The Events:
There are various events throughout the year. The main racing season runs from March to October. Events are split into individual and club/team racing.
The Track:
Tracks are short (around 70metres) shale ovals, with a concrete starting area on one straight. Corners are often banked with a surrounding safety fence. A clubhouse with changing and refreshment facilities is also common.
